Establishing and Recognising Traditional Councils

Once the premier of the province has recognised a traditional community it can establish a traditional council. The traditional council must be representative of the community in the following ways:
• 33% of its members must be women
• 40% of its members must be democratically elected
• the remaining members can be selected by the chief in terms of custom The traditional council will be able to operate within a defined area.
