Ordinary (District) Magistrates’ Courts (Criminal Courts)

These courts try the less serious crimes. They cannot try cases of murder, treason, rape, terrorism, or sabotage. They can sentence a person to a maximum prison sentence of 3 years (per offence) or a maximum fine of R100 000.
