The Executive Branch of Provincial Government

The executive branch is responsible for the day-to-day running of the province. Some of the functions of the executive are to initiate laws and policy, carry out laws passed by parliament, carry out policies and co-ordinate the functions of the provincial government departments and administrators.

Key Role-Players and Structures in the Provincial Executive

The key role-players in the executive that may play a role in formulating policy or drafting law will be:

  • The premier who is the head of the provincial government executive
  • 10 members of the executive council (MECs) also called provincial ministers
